(1755-1835) Маршалл, Джон
Государственный деятель, четвертый председатель Верховного суда [Chief Justice of the United States], вошедший в историю как Великий верховный судья ["Great Chief Justice"]. Уроженец Вирджинии, принимал участие в Войне за независимость [Revolutionary War]. Будучи федералистом [Federalist], поддержал принятие Конституции США [Constitution, U.S.]. Вел во Франции переговоры по делу "Икс-игрек-зет" [XYZ Affair]. В 1800-01 - государственный секретарь [Secretary of State]. В 1801-35 - верховный судья. Выступал за усиление и повышение авторитета Верховного суда [Supreme Court, U.S.], фактически создал суд в его нынешнем виде, играл решающую роль в его деятельности. В деле "Марбери против Мэдисона" [Marbury v. Madison] выступил за право суда объявлять неконституционными законодательные акты. Был против расширения прав штатов, в делах "Маккалох против штата Мэриленд" [McCulloch v. Maryland], "Гиббонс против Огдена" [Gibbons v. Ogden] и в деле Дартмутского колледжа [Dartmouth College Case] обосновал конституционность федеральной власти. В 1807 председательствовал на суде над А. Бэрром [Burr, Aaron]. В день похорон судьи Маршалла в память о нем звонили колокола по всей стране
